Tactile Rendering: a Vibrotactile Approach

چکیده
While moving a fingertip over a fine surface we experience a sensation that gives us an idea of the surfaces properties. A satisfactory simulation of this feeling is still an unsolved problem. In this paper we describe a rendering strategy based on vibrations which play an important role in the tactile exploration of fine surfaces. To produce appropriate excitation patterns we use an array of vibrating contactor pins. Similar to the colour model in computer graphics we simulate arbitrary vibrations as a superposition of only two sinewaves. Each sinewave is intended for the excitation of a specific population of mechanoreceptors. We carried out first tests of our rendering strategy on Brownian surfaces of different fractal dimension.

Multi-Fingered Tactile Feedback from Virtual and Remote Environments
This paper outlines a novel approach of displaying multifingered tactile feedback information from remote and virtual environments. Miniature tactile fingertip modules are developed allowing multi-fingered integration into an already existing hand force exoskeleton for display of combined tactile and kinesthetic feedback. The tactile feedback comprises generation of both, vibrotactile and therm...
متن کاملStudy of 2D Vibration Summing for Improved Intensity Control in Vibrotactile Array Rendering
2D tactile arrays may be integrated into handheld devices or VR controllers to enhance user experience, for example, with touch communication for collaborative tasks. Multiple tactors (tactile elements) may be activated in combination to approximate a vibration point (virtual tactor) having arbitrary position and intensity. We studied the combination of intensities from multiple tactors to guid...
متن کاملVibrotactile Identification of Signal-Processed Sounds from Environmental Events Presented by a Portable Vibrator: A Laboratory Study
Objectives: To evaluate different signal-processing algorithms for tactile identification of environmental sounds in a monitoring aid for the deafblind. Two men and three women, sensorineurally deaf or profoundly hearing impaired with experience of vibratory experiments, age 22-36 years. Methods: A closed set of 45 representative environmental sounds were processed using two transposing (TRH...
متن کاملA Systematic Approach to Musical vibrotactile feedback
This paper presents a new approach to the integration of vibrotactile feedback into digital musical instruments. A design strategy for musical vibrotactile systems is developed based on stimulator properties and neurophysiological studies of vibrotactile perception. A software vibration synthesizer driven by perceptual sound features extracted from audio feedback has been created based on these...
متن کاملInterfacing robotic tactile sensation with human vibrotactile perception for digit recognition
To achieve human like functionality, artificial arms are required to be incorporatedwith the sense of touch that can be achieved by affixing tactile sensors to them. The user operating these artificial arms, for any Human–Computer Interactive task, should be able to perceive the same tactile sensation as is acquired by the tactile sensor fitted artificial arms. This work is an initial step to i...
